Harbinsons Talk – July 2020

Building Consent Exemption to commence at the end of August

Additional building consent exemptions are being added to the Building Act. These new exemptions add to
the work that can already be done without a building consent, outlined in Schedule 1 of the Building Act.
Some work will need to involve a licensed building professional. All exempt building work must meet
the Building Code as well as other relevant legislation. This means that any sleep-outs or minor dwellings
intended to be rented out separately will still have to meet rental property requirements such as Healthy
Homes Standards.
